CONTEMPORARY SPANISH THEATER

1949 was the year of "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller. That year, "Historia de una escalera", the work of Antonio Buero Vallejo, sentenced to death and finally pardoned, managed 187 performances despite being partially censored during the Franco dictatorship.

The theater is a mirror reflecting the society. We offer a historical overview of the theater in Spain. How was theater before and during the civil war? And during the dictatorship? How is the theater today?

AN ACTOR

This week in =elemadrid= you have the chance to meet Juan Anillo, an actor from Saragossa, who lives and works in Madrid.

Juan appeared for years as an actor in the TV program Lo + plus and also has worked as an actor in advertising, film and theater.

MUSEO DEL PRADO: GOYA

The Prado has more than 15,000 paintings and receives about 6,000 visitors daily, more than 60% are foreigners (although one of them, Andy Warhol, visited it in ten minutes in 1983). It is the most visited building in Madrid and one of the most visited in Europe.

=elemadrid= offers a Spanish class in the halls of the museum. Goya and his work, André Malraux said that his paintings marked the beginning of modern art, will give us the opportunity both to practice Spanish and to know something more about the Spanish culture

LUNCH WITH THE TEACHERS

Every Thursday, the students have the opportunity to eat with the teachers of =elemadrid= and continue practicing Spanish. This week we go to a typical Madrilenian tavern very close to the school. You can check the menu of the day at school!

Madrid, besides having its own traditional dishes, is a city where you can easily find the great variety (do not only reduce it to the Valencian Paella and the Andalucian Gazpacho!) of the Spanish cuisine.

SPANISH MOVIE: THE FILMS OF ALEJANDRO AMENÁBAR

In =elemadrid=, you have the opportunity to discuss and analyse the great films of the Spanish cinemas.

This week we will talk about the director Alejandro Amenábar, a young talent that has revolutionized the new Spanish cinema. Maker of 5 movies: Thesis, Open Your Eyes (with North American remake, Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise), The Others (with Nicole Kidman in the main role), The Sea Inside (awarded at Venice Festival 2004, Golden Globe and Oscar 2005 for Best Foreign Language Film) and Agora.
