Al Pueblo is a private company that organises exclusive one-day excursions for =Elemadrid=. Their goal, apart from being cultural, is linguistic. The material they provide along with each excursion is didactic, with the purpose of offering you yet another opportunity to practice Spanish while discovering Spain.

Segovia

PROGRAM
Thanks to its many stunning historic monuments, such as the Roman aqueduct, the Alcazar and the Gothic Cathedral, Segovia was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

Queen Isabela La Catolica was crowned here and the poet Antonio Machado lived here.

Segovia has a lot of history to discover and present even more ... Come see!

We will see not only the most important monuments in Segovia, but also some gems of Romanesque Segovia.

Alcalá de Henares

PROGRAM
Alcalá de Henares is a town with a moving story. At first it was a Roman settlement, later transforming into a place where Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together in harmony, until the Catholic Kings arrived and expelled all those who refused to convert to Christianity.
In the fifteenth century, Cardinal Cisneros converted Alcalá into a college town, with his university a model for universities across the world.
Many famous people have walked through the streets of Alcalá: Cervantes, Nebrija, Quevedo, Azaña, to name but a few.
From almost all these periods of history, there remain historical monuments in the town. We will see Roman remains, the impressive university buildings and the Cervantes' house.

Chinchón

PROGRAM
Chinchón is a small, charming village 50 km to the south of Madrid. The village is well known for its garlic, artisan bread and anise liquor, but especially for its beautiful Plaza Mayor.

The buildings surrounding the plaza all have colonnades typical of the region, as well as over 200 wooden balconies. This makes the square an ideal setting for any show.

Many houses are now occupied by restaurants with tables on the surrounding balconies. We will end the day enjoying some tapas and the vibrant evening atmosphere in the lit up Plaza Mayor.
But Chinchón is most definitely more than a square. We'll also see the castle, the theatre and the Parador. In Chinchón find an ethnological museum where we can see how people lived in the countryside many years ago.

The 'San Lorenzo de El Escorial' monsatery is a multifunctional building, and we will spend the whole morning viewing different parts of this fantastic monument. Among other things we will visit Felipe IIs Palace, the home of the towns founder, the Basilica and the Royal Pantheon where the Kings of Spain lie. We will also visit the historic library with world globes that show us how they understood the layout of the earth many years ago, and an exhibition that teaches us how these were constructed.

PROGRAM
We entered the walled city of Avila through the door of San Vicente. Beside the door is the Basilica of San Vicente, a XI century Romanesque church. We travel through the historic centre of Avila, past the Cathedral, the Plaza del Mercado Chico and, of course, the imposing wall that surrounds the centre of the town, the best preserved of its type in Europe, from which you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

We'll see where Teresa of Avila grew up, a saint who was a true revolutionary of her times, and who has become a symbol of the city.

We recommend you try the 'Patatas Revolcanas', a delicious dish typical of Avila.

PROGRAM
Only 12 miles from the centre of Madrid, you find the village of El Pardo with its palace which have served many kings of Spain for recreation during the hunting season. The village is surrounded by a forest with the same name: the royal forest of El Pardo. In the twentieth century the palace served as residence to the ex-dictator of Spain, Francisco Franco. Its rooms have been preserved exactly as he left them. After the visit we enjoy a quick snack, before returning to Madrid.

Arriving in Toledo, we travel through the historic centre of the city, where Jews, Muslims and Christians have left their mark over the centuries.
Toledo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
You will see the jewels of this impressive city, with the Cathedral, the Santa María Synagogue, La Blanca and the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.

In the afternoon, you will be treated to a surprise. You will see both the hidden corners and the famous monuments of this stunning city.

PROGRAM

From the train station, we take a stroll into town, visiting the most important building in Aranjuez, the early eighteenth century palace with its splendid decoration. After the visit with a specialist guide, we then walk through some of the beautiful gardens surrounding the palace.

In the afternoon we walk through the Prince gardens. The gardens are full of surprises... sculptures, fountains and small pavilions that served to entertain the king appear before our eyes in the most unexpected places.

During our walk we will also view the most beautiful sites and fountains. Just before we return to the bus station in the afternoon, you will be treated to a surprise!
